Comprehensive Soldier Fitness program builds resiliency

CAMP ZAMA – Traditionally, when Army leaders talk about fitness, it was assumed they were talking about physical endurance and appearance; however with the introduction a new program, Soldiers and their families will soon learn that the idea of fitness extends to every part of life.

The Comprehensive Soldier Fitness Program is, according to Army Chief of Staff Gen. George Casey “a structured, long-term assessment and development program to build the resilience and enhance the performance of every Soldier, family member and [Department of the Army] civilian.”

The CSF program is not a single course, event, requirement or screening process, but a holistic approach to every area of life designed to build up mental and physical resilience for every member of the Army family.

The program relies upon four pillars: a Global Assessment Tool that includes an online survey comprised of more than 200 questions that is completed upon entry into the Army, annually and post-deployment. The GAT, which is mandatory for all Soldiers but voluntary for family members and civilian employees, analyzes several areas of health including emotional, social, spiritual and familial relationships.

The second pillar of the CSF program is the self-development modules, which allow Soldiers to develop their particular strengths and also identify areas they may be weak in, and target the trouble spots for improvement.

The third pillar in the program will include deliberate resilience training. This resilience training will be taught in all U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Commands and will be given at the unit level as well.

The last pillar in the program is the training and implementation of Master Resilience Trainers for every unit Army-wide. The MRT program will feature Soldiers helping Soldiers to develop the skills to cope with mental and physical stress related to Army life. The MRT specialists will also serve as advisers to commanders and senior leaders at the unit level. The MRT program will also expand in the years to come to possibly include civilians and family members.

“The ultimate goal of this program is to build resiliency for our Soldiers, family members and civilians and that is a broad mandate,” said Eric Pedersen, U.S. Army Garrison-Japan’s Army Substance Abuse Program manager and Employee Assistance Program coordinator. “What we are trying to focus on is to help manage adversity and to get folks ready to handle life’s twist and turns.”

The more prepared and trained Soldiers and families are in resiliency will ensure that when an adverse event occurs, they have the skills to cope and manage their stress, Pedersen said. The CSF program will also allow Soldiers and families to experience “post-adversity growth,” he said.

With an alarming rise of suicides within the Army as well as an increase in alcohol and substance abuse within the Army family, Army leadership took action to help better prepare Soldiers for the problems that arise after a deployment. However, Army leadership soon recognized the benefits of expanding the program.

“There is going to be residual value in asking everyone, including family members and civilians, to participate. We will see some resiliency building in our entire community,” Pedersen said.

At Camp Zama, numerous well-established programs in several areas will help build on what Pedersen calls “comprehensive everyone fitness.” These programs will concentrate on physical, family, social, emotional and spiritual well-being, he said. Physical programs will include the numerous exercise classes, fitness incentive programs, and swimming at Yano Fitness Center. For families, the USAG-J Army Community Service will continue to provide classes on parenting, stress management, financial planning and education services. For the social aspects of fitness, Family, Morale, Welfare and Recreation Command will continue to offer discounted tours and community nights at the Camp Zama Community Club. For emotional and mental health, military and family life consultants and behavioral health services will provide counseling services to Soldiers and families and for the spiritual well-being of USAG-J personnel, the USARJ chaplain office will continue to host Strong Bonds workshops, worship services and pastoral advice.

“Not so much is being changed but we are going to try and consolidate information to let people know what we have going on and what’s available to all of our community members,” Pederson said. “We want to do more marketing so people will see that we have a pretty broad spectrum of programs and agencies in place for the well-being of our community.”
